LEARNING IN CAMPHILL | eurythmy and land

Camphill Eurythmy Training

Eurythmy is a recent art of movement, initiated by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century. As an art supporting healthy development and social awareness it is practised in Waldorf schools, adult classes, businesses etc.

Steiner introduced therapeutic eurythmy into the work with children and adults with learning disabilities, with the elderly, into hospitals, medical practices and into the learning support programmes for Waldorf schools.

Camphill communities have used therapeutic eurythmy from the first beginnings as one of a range of therapies. In 1970 the Camphill Eurythmy Training was started at the Ringwood Sheiling Schools. This has now developed into a five-year foundation training in Eurythmy at Botton Village. Students live in the village community during their studies, contributing to its social and artistic fabric.

Most of its graduates embark on a post-graduate training in therapeutic eurythmy. Many join Camphill communities in the UK or overseas using eurythmy and eurythmy therapy in their work.

Biodynamic Land Training

The care for the land through biodynamic agriculture and horticulture has been at the heart of Camphill adult communities since the first such community was established in the 1950s. There are some 70 biodynamic farms and countless gardens in Camphill communities in the UK and Ireland, and these continue to enable productive and meaningful work for very many of their residents. Training in bio-dynamic principles and practices has always been a feature of all those involved in landwork.

In recent years a more coherent approach to the various land training activities of young volunteers and co-workers has been achieved through the formation of the Biodynamic Apprentice Training Scheme. A coordinated two-year teaching and training programme is the core of the course that is strongly practice based. Some 30 farms participate in the programme with over half of these in Camphill communities, such as Botton Village, Grange Village, Oaklands Park, Sturts Farm. Apprentices in Camphill communities are fully integrated in their host communities as resident Guest Volunteers or Co-workers.
